Got the tour rolling again at the start of the new school year with a visit to a local school, Christchurch Priory. A terrific welcome awaited me and an enthusiastic audience of KS2 students (years 3-6) asked me loads of great questions. Most of my tour events are aimed at KS3 students, so this made a nice change. And, instead of doing my usual tour talk, headmistress Miss Claire King had asked me in advance if I could spend my time giving students hints and tips about good story writing as this was their focus at the start of term. So,…. lots about ‘show-don’t-tell’ and use of ‘story questions’ and how to overcome that thorny problem of writer’s block! I decided I’d explain how ‘Free Writing’ can help loosen up the imagination and get ideas rolling – but as I’d not used it for some time, I had a go myself over the weekend beforehand – and shared the results with the students – telling the story that resulted from my ‘free writing’ went down a treat – and students wanted to know where they could buy the book! Perhaps I need to knuckle down and actually write it.
